Story Ideas

Imagine travelling on one of the worlds greatest train journeys past glacier-fed lakes, majestic mountain ranges and ferocious rivers. This is possible onboard the Rocky Mountaineer, an experience that will provide you with the story ideas of a lifetime.

The little train that could…and did!

From a small entrepreneurial dream to one of Canada’s leading tourism providers, Rocky Mountaineer Vacations achieves an important company milestone as it serves its one millionth guest this summer. Travellers from around the world have enjoyed the spectacular scenery found throughout British Columbia and Alberta while onboard the world-renowned two-day all daylight Rocky Mountaineer train, which provides a unique and compelling travel experience.

Get off the train and off the beaten track

Our newest route, the Rocky Mountaineer Fraser Discovery Route offers adventure, culture and history as it travels from the resort town of Whistler, BC to the Rocky Mountain town of Jasper, AB. The route opens up British Columbia’s seldom seen interior as guests get an up-close look at the Cariboo Chilcotin region’s lush grasslands, pristine lakes and rolling hills. New this year is the Gold Rush, Rails and Rockies package, giving travellers a chance to experience western life in the region by getting off the train in Quesnel, BC. Stay in a magnificent lodge, enjoy old-fashioned hospitality, come face to face with grizzlies, rope a cow, or take a gentle float down a river. All of this is possible and enjoyed in a relaxed western atmosphere, making this rail journey not only unique but also enlightening.

Double your fun with rail and cruise

Cruising has become more popular than ever and considered by many to be the ultimate dream vacation. With the new Rail and Cruise packages offered by Rocky Mountaineer Vacations, guests combine two lifetime experiences into one. Coupled with a Rocky Mountaineer train journey through Canada’s West, guests get the rare experience of riding the rails through the spectacular Canadian Rockies, sailing up-close to massive glaciers in Glacier Bay National Park and walking in the footsteps of Klondike gold rush prospectors in Skagway. Rail and Cruise offers an excellent choice for first-time visitors to Western Canada and Alaska.

Canada’s newest culinary dream team

The culinary experience on the Rocky Mountaineer train routes has always been exemplary, but now we’re really kicking it up a notch with four times the talent, experience and expertise. This year Rocky Mountaineer Vacations welcomes aboard Rocky Mountain Catering, which was recently established by four world-renowned BC Chefs, Frederic Couton, Joseph Lassaga, Jean Pierre Guerin and Raoul Prigent. The vast experience of this dream team will breathe new life into our onboard cuisine in both GoldLeaf and RedLeaf Service and will thrill the discriminating palates of Rocky Mountaineer guests.

Leave your Blackberry at home

Travel’s answer to slow food is slow travel - vacations that make you slow down. It’s about forgoing those airport nightmares and ten-cities-in-one-week heart-attack-inducing vacations for an experience that gives you time to reflect and reconnect with yourself and your family. It’s about getting there in a way that makes the journey as important as the destination. While slow travel vacations continue to be popular, according to the U.S. Tour Operators Association, adventure travel is also on the rise. Rocky Mountaineer Vacations offers a way to do both. It gives travellers a chance to slow it down while still experiencing adventure - to say “bye bye BlackBerry” and “hello” to the breathtaking spectacle of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

A sustainable train of thought

Train travel is getting the green thumbs up as an eco-travel alternative to driving and flying. Rocky Mountaineer Vacations is one luxury train experience on track to reducing its carbon footprint. The company has a long history of environmental commitment and has undergone a rigorous environmental audit, set tough targets for improvement, and set up a regular process for reporting back on its progress. Passionate about water conversation and recycling, Rocky Mountaineer Vacations has set a target to reduce its waste by 50 percent by the end of the 2009 operating season.  In addition, cutting-edge technology has been installed on all its locomotives, significantly reducing idling time. This translates into lower fuel consumption and exhaust emissions and less noise pollution. Next stop: expansion of plans to recycle all meal trays in Rocky Mountaineer RedLeaf Service, exploration of composting on the train and the testing and monitoring of the effectiveness of “green” locomotive technologies. And the big one?  Dreams of becoming the first passenger rail service in North America to operate a hybrid locomotive.
