Waste Reduction

Alison Stewart, the Director of Environment, Health and Safety, plays a key role in turning the vision of sustainability into reality at Armstrong Group.  Since Alison joined Armstrong Group in 2005, she has been working closely with Ian Robertson, the company’s Director of Sustainable Development to implement sustainable development initiatives.  And now Alison is working hard to implement the recommendations outlined in a recent report prepared by the environmental consultants, CH2M HILL.

“Waste reduction is an important goal for us,” says Alison.  “Ian and I have been looking at options to increase the amount of recycling that can be done. And we are also looking at options for alternative packaging, including a meal tray that is completely biodegradable.”

Alison has to take into consideration all types of environmental impacts and come up with innovative solutions that don’t compromise our guests’ experience.

“Noise pollution is an issue,” she says. “When our trains are idling, it is, of course, damaging to the environment. It also has a negative effect on the comfort level of nearby residents. To address this, we’ve been testing generator cars that have a high degree of noise proofing and a self-monitoring system that minimizes idling time.

This is just one example of how Alison looks at the impacts on communities from every angle and then works to find innovative solutions to mitigate them while maintaining a high level of service for our guests.
